If you’ve placed Adsense ads in your blog and are underwhelmed with the response, here’s why and how you can do something about it.

1. People can’t even see your ads.

People read your blog posts. They don’t really scrutinize your sidebars, or ogle at your footer. If you just focus on your article, are your ads visible at all? Or are they tucked safely away in some dead zone in your page?

Dead zones: Lower lefthand corner, bottom of the page (if there’s a lot of space between the last line in your post and your footer).

Solution: Move your ads closer to the area that people actually look at. For example, just beneath your post’s title, or right after the last line of your article.

2. People mentally block off your ads.

Do your ads look distinctly different from the rest of your article? Do they have a different background color or a different link color?

Solution: If your post contains black text and blue links set against a white background, make your ads also contain black text and blue links set against a borderless white background.

3. Your ads are simply not interesting.

Boring ads appear when ad robots have a hard time figuring out what your page is all about.

Solution: Use a more directly-worded title (avoid “cute” titles), and write your articles using fifth grade level English. Use words that you think advertisers will be targeting. For example, write “shoes” instead of “sole warmers.”

And if it still doesn’t work in spite of your site’s high traffic? Then consider something other than Adsense. And, as you have correctly guessed, that will be the topic of a future post. Stay tuned!
