What If The Search Engines Died?
352 words | Last Updated: August 10, 2009 |
If the search engines disappeared, will people still visit your site? If you're relying only on search engine traffic, you've built your site on the shifting sands of web uncertainty. Fortunately, there still is hope.
The key lies in making your presence felt in places where people congregate. Or, to go a step further, the key lies in creating such a "Third Place."
What do people do online?
- Check email
- Search / Do research
- Keep in touch with friends
- Watch videos
- View/share photos
- Blog (write or redecorate their sites)
- Participate in forums and discussion boards
It's up to you which of those activities you would like to target. Will you make the time to create a free, web-based email system? Launch another search engine? Build another video or photo-sharing site? Set-up an easy-to-use blogging community?
If you are not ready to invest in programmers and dedicated web servers to support more than a million unique visitors a month, you will need to form a partnership with other bloggers.
In The 2010 Programme for the IT Outsourcing Sector, you'll find a PDF file of Sen. Mar Roxas' speech delivered during the 7th Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition held last Feb. 15, 2007 at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Manila.
He talked about a plan, plus the dynamics of partnering, of working in a team. He said that "it is possible to build on success" and that we "can expand without blowing quality."
Bloggers, publishers, or participants in a global online conversation need to recognize that we, each one of us, attract a certain amount attention in the form of visitors. And if we know how to work together, we can build a sufficient amount of traffic that is sustainable, even if by some chance the search engines disappeared tomorrow or de-listed us from their indexes yesterday afternoon.
How do we go about doing this? You'll find an example of this cooperative effort in an upcoming post. Stay tuned!
