Here are tips on how to structure your web site for maximum earnings online:
1. Put your Wordpress blog in a folder. This gives you greater flexibility because you can easily create non-Wordpress or non-blog sections of your site. In addition, if you later decide to move your site to another web host provider, you won't need to tear your hair out dealing the the programming peculiarities of your new web host.
(Yes, I realize that ManuelViloria.com is not following the above advice. Learn from my mistake. There are quite a number of pages here that are receiving traffic, and I'm in no mood to create redirects.)
2. Create folders or files in the root or starting level of your site for About, Contact Us, and Privacy. A lot of affiliate programs require that your site have a Privacy statement. A "Contact Us" page or folder also helps establish credibility, because you are allowing others to easily reach you online. The "About" page will be more useful if you consider the point-of-view of your site visitors.
3. Use a clear hierarchical structure or outline. One of your folders could be named "Articles", and inside that folder, you can create other folders such as "Finance" or "Marketing."
This helps people clearly see the organization of your site just by looking at the website URL.
Yes, this is similar to the pre-blog or pre-Wordpress era, when some people were quite OC about the way information in their web sites was presented. Just remember to place here key articles that will give your visitors a positive impression of your site.
Afterall, some blog posts may have been written on one of your off-days, and a few of your site visitors might be disillusioned. With key articles on your site, however, people may forgive you for your momentary blog blahs as they savor your "Best of..." posts.
4. Expand your site. Here are suggested folders which you may add to your site in the future: Audio (podcasts), Video (videocasts or screencasts), Downloads (software or ebooks you've written), Email Courses (unique, not-in-the-blog articles sent in 7 - 10 installments), Photos (photoblog), and many more (if you still have time, that is).
Build a site with a clear and flexible structure and reap the rewards of higher search engine rankings and site traffic in about three months.
(Are non-blogs dead? If you've been told that blogs are the way to go and that web pages of the 1990s era are dead, hang on to your wallet because I will reveal the surprising truth in the next post.)
