Video Pop-In Genius
693 words |
Eric Holmlund and Amy Cross privately launch the Video Pop-In Genius software, which allows your videos to fly into the middle of your web page, virtually unblocked by pop-up blockers. It works quite convincingly (if not startlingly), if your visitors have a fast broadband connection.
So, is this software for you?
First of all, you might be wondering: why pop-up a video? Why not simply embed your video right there on the web page?
Well, if you're using Video Pop-In Genius and if your visitor is using Internet Explorer, when they scroll down your web page, they'll still see your video. It will follow them around.
If you use the old way and simply embed a video somewhere on your page, it remains stuck in that position. It will not follow your visitors as they scroll down the page.
True, some visitors may find it annoying especially if they're more interested in the text portions of your page. But you have to admit that people will notice the auto-playing pop-up video.
(NOTE: Firefox users will not experience the follow-you-around effect of the video. So if majority of your site visitors do not use IE, then you won't get to capitalize on the persistent nature of Video Pop-In Genius.)
I wish, however, that the video pop-in (which appears to rest over a white rectangle) would instead float over a transparent rectangle. That way, when it moves around, people will still be able to read the text near the edges of the video.
At the moment, people who do get annoyed will simply click on the red "x" button in the upper righthand corner of the video and completely forget about your multimedia message.
Anyway, a bit of HTML tweaking can easily fix that issue. Here's an example of a more transparent shadow behind the floating video:

Another interesting aspect of fly-in videos is the ability to include an Opt-In box above, to the left or right of, or even below the video. This means your IE-using visitors will see your opt-in offer even if they scroll down the page.
But please do not use Video Pop-In Genius in your blog posts. At the moment, the code instructs your browser to pop-in and automatically play the video each time the web page is loaded or refreshed.
If you have regular readers who tend to visit more than one blog post in your site, they will see that soon-to-be-annoying video EVERY time they move from page to page.
It is better, therefore, to use that effect on stand-alone pages such as your salesletter page.
I'm still in the middle of testing whether the addition of video will increase the number of opt-ins. So far, the results have been mixed, with video-less opt-in boxes getting slightly more sign-ups.
And that's why I'm not too excited about getting this software right away.
Still, if you want to use it just to make your salesletter or landing page different (and I can understand why Eric and Amy are limiting the distribution of this software), then go ahead and give it a try, assuming you find the "by invitation only" link.
I have a feeling technophobes will appreciate being shielded from having to deal with javascript or "serious" HTML codes, thanks to this software.
But if you're a techie, or (like the Host4Profit Promo 1028 Customers) have access to techie friends, then this video fly-in effect can be easily done for you. Just supply the video.
Remember, though, that video is not some magic solution that will instantly help you make money online. Please work on improving your the words on your page first. Once you get that going, introduce video and measure the response. And that's when you'll know.
You don't have to be a genius to have a video pop-in effect in your web pages. All you need is either some amount of technowizardry, or access to techie friends.
