There seems to be an increase in Twitter spam (where random people "follow" you), but I don't mind. It gives me an interesting lesson in niche marketing. Here's why....

The old way of Twitter spam goes this way: Someone follows your Twitter account.

You then get an email notification about your new follower. So you visit your follower's page, you see that there's no photo and there are hardly any Twitter entries. You get bored so you...

...click on the website URL found in the Twitterer's bio.

The new way reveals an increase in the amount of effort and preparation. This time, your Twitter spammer uploads a photo. They give their faux Twitter account a face. They also post about 10 messages.

Then a few seconds later, another character will follow you. Again, their account has a unique, normal sounding name, plus a photo. Yet when you visit their web site, you'll notice that they used the exact same blog template are your first follower.

Why do people take the time to upload photos, post Twitter messages, and follow you? Could they be banking on their chosen niches?

And here's where Twitter spam can give you a lesson in Niche Marketing. For some reason, people are busy building sites on the following topics:

  • Caffeine Addiction
  • Eating Disorders
  • Modern Legal Issues

If you haven't tried Twitter, get a free account now. And hope that these avid "followers" will reveal their niche topics to you. Have fun! :-)
