Twitter and Blog Traffic

A number of site owners have been using Twitter recently to help drive traffic to their blogs. Here are some tips to help you avoid shooting yourself in the foot in your bid to get more visitors to your site...
1. Add more Twitter posts before following people. When you follow people on Twitter, some of them will get an email notification. They might decide to visit your Twitter page. If they see that you have not made a significant number of Twitter posts, they will think that you're just Twitter-spamming them.
2. Follow a reasonable number of Twitter users each day. Don't go hog crazy and follow hundreds of Twitterers a day. If you do, you'll bloat your "Following" stats. When people see that you're following 1,000 people but only 2 are following you back, what will that say?
Start by following no more than 20 first. See how many of those will follow you back.
3. In your bio, post a link to your personal blog. When you use a personal url in your Twitter bio section, other Twitter users will see you as a person rather than an automated niche blog. They will be more inclined to follow your Twitter posts, which will translate to an increase in your Twitter followers.
The higher your number of Twitter followers, the greater the chance that more people will want to follow you. And that leads to even more followers... well, you can see how things will keep increasing in a neverending cycle of sorts.
4. Mix up your Twitter posts. Try to add variety, so that you don't end up posting only URLs to your latest blog entry, or purely what you eat, or purely Twitter greetings. Talk about different random events, yet somehow tie them all together to reflect your personality.
Building traffic to your blog with the help of Twitter is like planting. You can't rush things and expect wonderful results. If you do take the time to plan and patiently grow the normal way, then things will be looking up for you and your blog in the coming Year of the Rat.
