The recent Google pagerank drops have gotten quite a few folks worried. Was it because of text link ad selling? Does this spell the end of this form of advertising? Well... no. It just means things have to evolve a bit. And yes, you can generate traffic via text links if you handle it properly.

If you're after search engine points, then text link advertising can get you in trouble with organizations who don't like dealing with "manufactured" search engine points.

If you're after media exposure, however, and if the text link ads that you deal with make use of nofollow, or javascript, or other ways that do not attempt to gain a search engine advantage, then try the TopSpots widget from Scratchback.

It makes use of javascript, and does not pass any search engine juice to the advertisers. It also comes with a "bump" feature where you can gain the top spot by outbidding an existing advertiser.

Want to try it? You can get a spot today for only $1, and it will be approved as long as the messages and destination web site aren't too... ahem... eyebrow-raising. :-)

UPDATE #2: Temporarily removed the scratchback widget. CTR was 2%. Will reinstate the widget in the future, after the revived Blogrush experiment.

UPDATE #1: After reading Ian's comment below, I did some more checking. Yes, this is actually a tipping concept. That's why there is no obligation to approve a submitted ad, and there are no refunds.

You invite your readers to tip you for your blogging efforts, and they may even have their site plugged via the TopSpots widget.
