Should You Submit To Web Directories?

Someone asked if submitting your site to web directories will help it gain PR.

If you submit to reputable directories, your web site will get some amount of PR. Spread your submissions. Don’t just focus on the high PR directories.

I once outsourced directory submission, and I think that was partly the reason why a PR0 site went up to PR5 in just 5 weeks. Of course, it also helped that a PR update was about to happen just a few weeks after the site was created. Here’s the list of directories that the site was submitted to.

Manuel, I am only now trying my hand at blogging. So I find your tips very useful. Did you have to pay for outsourcing your submissions? I gather you did not have to do all the work to submit your sites to all those directories you listed above. It’d be great to hear more details. Btw, I am really someone you know from your high school days; I just go by an alias in cyberspace.

Yes, I had directory submissions outsourced for around $60 via seo2020.com

In the future, though, I’ll do away with those submissions and then just rely on existing high traffic, high PR blogs to “announce” the existence of new sites.

Hmmm… a blast from the past. It’s great to see someone from high school out here in e-commerce space. Either you chose your alias based on geography, or you’re somehow connected with writer P.G. (who wrote a novella using our batchmates as actual characters).

I tried enlisting to the directory listings mentioned. They need me to put a link code in my site, which i dont know how to do. I am not a technical person. I just had my blog site set up by my hosting company.

Hi Madel,

I suggest you do not put a link back to their site first. Just submit to sites that are willing to list you without a linkback.

Also, don’t be surprised if your site takes as long as three months before it appears in some of the directories listed above.

If you’re curious about the PageRank of the listed directory sites, please visit http://www.WebmasterEyes.com and put the url of this page (http://www.manuelviloria.com/archives/should-you-submit-to-web-directories) in the “Enter URL” box. Once you click on the GO button, you’ll see this page, along with PageRank (or PR) indicators beside the sites listed above.

The higher the PR, the higher (usually) the value of the link from that site to yours.

[From Manuel] Hi JSun! You might consider putting up a web site containing sample articles which ezine owners may reprint and broadcast to their subscribers. Or you might even build a blog (or podcast or videoblog) about your DVD’s topics, and invite people to subscribe to your mailing list. Your site and newsletter provides some free info for your visitors and subscribers, while marketing your DVD.
