Marketing in Forums: Is It Worth It?
450 words |
Marketing in forums refers to the act of posting comments in various online discussion boards, and then pointing a link to your web site via a forum signature (which appears at the end of your post). Sometimes, you will succeed. Other times, you may get more than what you bargained for.
Here's the deal: Visit Google and search for forum "yourkeyword".
If your keyword, for example, is search marketing, then search Google for forum "search marketing".
You'll then visit those forums, read some of the posts, and get a feel of the place. This will help you assess how those places treat newcomers like you, and you'll also get a firsthand look at how overly eager marketers burn up in flames when they abuse those forums.
Once you gain more confidence, you will participate by posting something useful in those online discussion boards. Here are examples of comments that are NOT useful:
I agree.
That has been answered somewhere else on this board.
I've been searching for the answer to that question, too!
If you do not add to the knowledge stored in a forum, then people who see whatever it is you're promoting in your forum signature will have a negative impression of you and the product you're promoting.
If you're an affiliate of an internet marketing ebook, for example, please avoid promoting it in forums such as WickedFire.com, because you will be flamed (aka: virtually torn to pieces) by the members who hate such types of ebooks.
(I'm surprised why some marketers have recommended that we promote affiliate programs in the WF forum.)
In the WarriorForum board, affiliate links are not allowed in your forum sig.
(I wonder why some marketers are teaching others to post in the WarriorForum without explaining that the forum sig should lead to your own site, and not to an affiliate merchant's site.)
Is It Worth It?
Assuming you post useful articles and your forum signature provides a link to your own site (not a simple redirect to a merchant's site), and your post is acceptable to the forum community, is it worth it?
In terms of web site traffic, expect anywhere from 5 to 30 visitors (a month) depending on the forum's activity and the quality of your post. Not much value, right?
But in terms of contacts, people will reach out to you via private messages or emails as a result of your participation in the forums. Moreso if you will offer a free tool online.
Here's to proper forum marketing, plus the opportunity to gain more friends and business contacts.

Sometimes you can also get an SEO benefit depending on whether you can get some keywords in there or not!
