Market Samurai: Should You Even Get It?
823 words | Last Updated: May 28, 2009 |
A lot of people excited about how to make money online have been asking about Market Samurai, touted as the last keyword research tool you will ever need. Given its $149 ticket price (or $97 if you get it during the first week of the 12-day free trial period), you're probably wondering if it is worth it, or if you'll simply say "Don't buy Market Samurai" and invest your time on other things.
Well, here's what can be found on the web...
In the flood of reviews about MS, you will find a couple of negative posts about why some people are completely unimpressed with MS. You may have to exert a bit more effort, however, to find out what exactly does Market Samurai do?
And if you go that route, be prepared to face a lot of technical jargon. Some of the newcomers to the internet marketing field might still be struggling with terms such as phrase, broad and exact matches. Or backlinks, directory submissions, pagerank, keyword position, SoC, and a whole slew of techie phrases that will make your head spin.
Let's try and simplify things: Market Samurai will help you quickly find keywords that are worth writing about. You can do this manually, but MS will automate and speed things up for you.
What makes a niche keyword phrase or long tail keyword worth targeting? Well, there may be advertisers who are willing to pay a lot for visitors who are searching for those keywords. If you're planning to make money online with Adsense, then it is important for you to know what those high earnings per click keywords are.
Another thing you can consider is that there may be a lot of people who are searching for those phrases. More people translates to more searches per day, which transforms into higher traffic for your site or blog. And you know what they say, right? Content plus Targeted Traffic plus Pre-selling equals Profit.
And finally, there may be just a few people writing about those search terms. By rationally choosing the right keywords, the webpages you publish will have a higher chance of appearing in the first page of the search engine results, for the terms that your target market is hungrily searching for.
In other words, if you know what those magical and profitable keywords are, then you will be able to make better use of your time (or the salary you pay to your virtual assistant or outsourced writer). You will be able to focus on high traffic, high profit keywords that don't have too much competition, so that your webpages will rank high in Google and other search engines.
So, is Market Samurai worth getting?
You tell me. I mean, let's say someone handed you a list of keywords worth writing about (from a financial and online business point of view). What are you going to do about it?
Are you going to search for online products related to those keywords? Will you sign up in various affiliate programs and promote those products? Will you set up a site (with the keyword in the domain name) and publish ten blog posts that pre-sell those products?
Are you going to properly submit your 10-page blog to various directories? Will you submit 30 articles to around 30 article directories (30 articles per directory), where each article contains a backlink to your 10-page blog? Will you bookmark your blog in 30 social bookmarking sites? Will you create 10 more articles for use in 4 Squidoo lenses (2 to 3 articles per lens), to help drive traffic back to your main blog?
Yes, knowing the profitable keywords is a first step. But it's only the tip of a gigantic writefest of an iceberg. If all you're going to do is collect keywords, then Market Samurai is utterly worthless and a complete waste of your time.
But if you're willing to follow through and turn those words into gold, then go ahead and give Market Samurai a try. Remember, there's a 12-day trial (though I don't know how long that offer will be available).
What else can you do with keywords aside from making money with Adsense or affiliate marketing (or both)? You can create your own infoproduct that will serve people who are searching for those very same keywords.
Yes, you can accept online payments for downloadable products that you create (or outsourced, or purchased master resell rights to) and also make money that way. With your keyword list plus your own affiliate program, you can train your affiliates to compose their own blog posts (using those coveted keywords), drive traffic back to your product salespage, and help increase your online sales.
Market Samurai is just a tool. If you like to write (or have access to people who love to write), then get it, use it, follow-through, and succeed. Otherwise, you'll just end up with a lovely but lonely addition to your virtual tool rack.

Thanks Manuel for taking the time to review Market Samurai!
You're correct, there is a 12-day trial.
But something that I thought was worth mentioning is that the keyword research module is free. So if someone only wants the keyword functionality inside Market Samurai (and doesn't need the SEO Analysis, Content Research, Link-Building, Adwords, Monetization or Publishing features), then they can essentially use Market Samurai for free.
Thanks again for taking the time to review us - I'm glad that we could give you something interesting enough to write about

You can also learn to use Market Samurai when you join the Thirty Day Challenge. Excellent tool!
Hi Manuel,
Thanks for your honest appraisal of keyword research tools like Market Samurai. I agree, so many marketers think that by simply purchasing tools like this that 99% of their work is done.
As you say, it's what you do with the information you get and how you apply it to your marketing efforts that counts.
I've been using MS for a while and have found it very good.
jonel.
I think people should not buy Market Samurai unless they have a plan or system that they will be following. They could have done well with SEO for Firefox.
Jay, the trial period for MS in Thirty Day Challenge is 40 days!
There are other and more technical stuff in MS than meets the eye. It's in the Immediate Edge, Ed Dale et al's for advance internet marketers' course and membership site.
I will buy MS in the future, but I have to admit, it's kin of difficult to learn. Perhaps because I haven't read the tutorial and never watched the tutorial videos.
Thanks for this article, I'll make sure to recommend it to my friend, she was considering buying MS. Sounds like it really is worth the money.
Take care, Julie
I have the paid version of Market Samurai, and I’m thinking of using this great piece of Internet marketing software to do some good. I also need some ideas for great posts, so this is a win-win situation all around.

Jay makes a good point about using the 30 Day Challenge as a tutorial for MS. A while back I downloaded a trial version of MS and actually uninstalled it. But after watching the 30DC videos, it gave me a true perspective on the value of this software. Well... I've since purchased the full version and am very happy.
Hi,
Good review of Market Samurai. Helped me make the decision to go with the program and spend a few bucks to test. If nothing else, I figure I'll get an education out of the show.
So thanks,
Ry
[From Manuel] Thanks, Ry. With that wonderful outlook, I'm certain you will gain much success in your online ventures.

Thanks for the article, one of my mentors told me this is a neccessity but I have been reluctant to spend the extra money. I have also been looking into using Spyfu. Does anybody know the quality of that software?
I tried to buy MS using the $97 promo but it keeps going to a $147 page... Contacted MS Support regarding this discrepancy or false advertising... been 2 days and still no answer...
Anyone here can help or have a link that I can buy this software. Hopefully this is not the quality of service MS provides going forward
