Making Money Online Lesson 0
1090 words | Last Updated: February 25, 2008 |
If you're a beginner who wants to know how to make money online, then welcome to this series of tutorials on how to do just that. Before we begin with Lesson 1, however, let's start at a point even before the first step a lot of us take when we rush into this thing called the internet.
You probably have so many questions right now about computers, blogs, internet marketing, and how all these things tie together to help you make money immediately, but there's a question that is conveniently avoided in so many free and for-a-fee ebooks floating around the web.
And here's that uncomfortable question...
Do you like to write?
If you don't like to write, can you make yourself write? And if you can't do that, can you find someone who will help you write?
Please note that I didn't ask if you like to tinker with computers or adjust code. Nor did I ask if you're so in love with web design that you can't keep yourself from making your web site "look just right" every now and then.
Are you committed to writing online?
If this is your first time to enter the waters of internet marketing, please don't jump on the outsourcing or using someone else's content (via private label rights) bandwagon. It will just leave you disillusioned three months down the road.
But if you're determined to write (better if you're one of the few who actually enjoy doing this), then this series of tutorials is for you.
Still with me? Okay, let's get started...
What Will You Write About?
Think of your interests. Think of the interests of your friends or the people you bump into and engage in a conversation outside your home.
List all of those interests down. (Go ahead, grab a sheet of paper.)
Please don't evaluate, and please do not judge. Just focus on scribbling down all those topics that enter your mind.
You now have your list of at least 10 items? Okay, let's classify what you've written down. (If you haven't written anything down, please take the time to do so first.)
On a separate sheet of paper, create three columns. Label those columns with the following headings:
- Love/Relationships
- Health
- Money
Now go back to your first list of (hopefully) at least 10 items, and copy each one under the appropriate column. If for some reason you are unable to classify anything under any column, if your interests are in no way connected with Love, Health, or Wealth, then please go back to the drawing board and make a list of 10 interests.
(And if you still are not able to come up with such a list, then thank you for taking the time to do this. You might wish to pursue another field of interest, because making money online might not be worth your time.)
Let's take something concrete now, shall we?
Let's say you're interested in your children. That topic can fall under Love/Relationships.
And let's suppose you're looking for a baby stroller for your youngest child. You've search through different stores near your place, and you've even asked your friends for advice.
Next, go to Google and search for any of the following: stroller, baby stroller, strollers, baby strollers.
On the righthand side, do you see a column of Sponsored Links? Do you see a lot of advertisers? If you do, that means there are companies out there who are interested in people searching online for strollers.
So if you write about strollers, and subsequently attract the crowd that's searching for those items, then you can work with those advertisers. Your interest, therefore, is now a potential topic which will help you make money online.
If you don't see any advertisers, or if you only see ONE advertiser, well... It's up to you if you still wish to write about strollers. Then again, your aim might be to sell your own line of baby products and not rely on advertisers, right?
Now go down your list of 10 interests and check Google for advertisers.
After you complete this exercise, you'll have a better idea of the earning potential of your topics of choice.
(Just to let you know, the Make Money Online market attracts a lot of people, but does not necessarily earn a lot of advertising revenue. That doesn't mean you should turn your back on it, though, as will be revealed in succeeding lessons.)
Assuming you've seen a fairly good number of advertisers interested in the people searching for the topics you will write about, ask yourself this question:
Can you write seven 400-word articles about EACH of those topics?
If you can't, or if you're not willing to, then we'll just have to accept the reality that this whole make money online dream will forever remain just a dream.
I remember a friend of mine who asked how often she must publish a post in her blog, and when I said she has to post at least once a week, she said: "Gaaaa! I don't have time to write that often!"
Well guess what? I visited her blog and was surprised to discover that she had written every single day!
Which brings me back to you...
Are you COMMITTED to writing at least once a week?
And if you are, then... are you also committed to succeeding online?
If you still are, then avoid the urge to build a web site on some free host (i.e., Blogger.com) for now. Build one you yourself will own. You can experiment with those free sites later on. For those of you who are committed today, focus on building your own site.
To build your site, you'll need a budget of around $15/year (for your site's name), $25/month for your web site, and about 1 hour of writing time each day.
(Correction: Make that $30 for your domain name's first two years.)
Before you do go out and start your site, you will need a domain name (those names that end with dot com, such as Google.com). So, what domain name should you register?
That will be the subject of an upcoming MMO lesson.

Wow thanks for this tutorial! I'm really looking forward to more of this!
I have so much to say but I might just flood the comment section. LOL. I started writing a blog in 2003 just for the heck of it, hence I did not find a need to buy a domain, and I did not need to pay for anything online. I am online-purchase phobic, and I think I still am. (but good thing that there's Paypal already for the Philippines.) Come December 2007, I had to make a hard decision if I want to pay for my blog service (free accounts will not be provided anymore) or if I want to leave. If I leave, sayang naman. So I chose to stay. I still didn't buy a domain name just because my blog has been online for a long time, so changing the URL might be a bad idea or an unnecessary cost for me (Some people already associate Skyllo with Blog-City). I have to pay $45 a year for my blog host, expensive I know, but my files are all intact and I don't need to worry + the linkblogs feature (see the right gutter of my blog) because it's like i have my own digg or reddit or something similar + customer service has always been prompt and nice even when I still had a free account. I thought of breaking even so I decided to monetize my blog. After trying it out, I figured that it's quite slow moving to depend on just 1 blog, so now I have made 2 more with specific content. I've also made it a point to put tags on my main blog's entries. Surprisingly my tags come up quite well on Google search, giving me the extra traffic I need.
I just realized how much I've devoted my time to writing. I'm no Journalism major, but I've always found myself writing and writing and writing. I still have the energy to update my LiveJournal and Multiply and I rarely cross-post just so I can say "I posted". And I make videos/vlogs every now and then.
Hi Jamie,
This tutorial applies to people who are just starting out. Since you already have a site at Blog-City.com, just maintain it (because it has already gained online credibility and will be useful for traffic purposes).
For your upcoming blogs, you can try getting a domain name.
(Jamie, $45 a year is quite affordable.)
I see, but I still look forward to your tutorials. Maybe I missed out some things!
Is getting free domain names fine? Like DotTK?
[From Manuel] I haven't tried free domain names, Jamie. I wonder what "free" means, specially after the first year.
[...] glad to know that after reading and completing the steps in Making Money Online Lesson 0, you are excited to continue on your Make Money Online [...]
Thanks for this tutorial but i don't quite agree that your interests must fall into love/relationship, health and weath to make money online.
For example, you may have great gardening skills and your garden is the envy of all your neighbors and beyond. What I will do is jot down what are the skills that I have made to make my garden so lovely into an ebook and make it sellable and there will be a market to buy - the size of the buyer market is dependent but it still makes you money if you know how to promote it right. For example, find a forum that is all about gardening and promote it within the forum - perhaps you split the profit with the forum owner because the forum owner provided you with his memberlist to market to.
There are many ways to make money online, that does not require you to write everyday. You can create a membership site or forum for a niche subject but this takes some planning, and there is also affilliate marketing and you can also freelance if you have some skills that you can sell to others that need it.
To sum it up, I think this article by Marlon Sanders sums up some of the best ways to make money online, check it out at http://www.create-an-income.com/how-to-escape-your-day-job-pay-your-bills-and-make-progress-towards-the-ideal-lifestyle
Thanks and I do have to say that I like your product reviews.
I am also finding my way to making money online and hope to see some results soon.
Hi Kendra... If you look at some of the reasons why people are interested in gardening, you'll find that some do it for health reasons, for personal satisfaction, or to gain the admiration of friends and neighbors (love/relationships).
Since we can find a connection between gardening and health, or love/relationships, we next search for "gardening" in Google. I found one advertiser (but that might be due to geo-targeting issues, since I'm not based in the US).
Thank you for the link to Marlon's article. I also visited your site and particularly enjoyed your post about ignoring and forgetting all the hype.
Here's wishing you success in your online ventures!
Hi Manuel,
Thanks for starting this tutorial and for pointing beginners dreaming of making money online towards the right direction and save them the expense and frustration by taking another route.
As I found out from my own experience, after spending a lot of money buying e-books, courses and affiliate products, I still have to learn how to write.
Most internet marketers deliberately forget to tell us the importance of writing because it is not easy. It is counter to the illusion that they want to portray that success in internet marketing is just one e-book away. But you just have to look at their long sales letter to see how important writing is.
So, let me sharpen my pencil and get ready for the lessons.
Thanks Manuel!
Robert
From what I've seen, Robert, you can write.
The only thing left is to go and do it on a fairly consistent basis.
And just in case you'd like to see how people can create value with the help of words, please see the salesletter of Make Your Words Sell.
(Please do not buy the ebook; just read the salesletter and take note of what kind of impact it has on you, as a reader.)
Hi Manuel,
Too late! The e-book's collecting cobwebs inside my computer.
You see how I've been avoiding writing for so long now?
OK, time to visit Ken Evoy and Joe Robson again!
Robert
Hi Manuel, you do have valid points and I will be adding you on my blogroll because I believe that each and everyone of us must have access to different viewpoints to be able to reach a decision that is right;-). Thanks for visiting my website.
Will come back for more.
Hay ... am still an amateur blogger.
@Kendra - Thanks, Kendra! I hope to visit KL again in the future. The last time I was there was in 2005.
@annamanila - No need to rush into problogging, Anna. That might take some of the fun out of writing.
Thanks foon and insights you have provided and shared here. I enjoyed reading your post. Thanks!
[From Manuel] Thanks for visiting, Aurelius!
I am not here to promote a website. Just to ask a question about one. I have been researching a business that is called bigtickettowealth and was wondering if you have seen it? its a pretty penny to sign up but their system seems to be pretty right on. they show you how to market, where to market, and what you make from doing it all. what do you think about this product??
-Aimee
[From Manuel] Hi Aimee! I haven't tried their product yet. I saw their website, but didn't feel compelled enough to give their product a try.
Lots of good information here on your blog... I have been writing articles for people since about October. You can definitely make a profit doing it if you can write at all. I started off charging very little for my articles, now I have a large list of clients and I am raising my prices. They already know they are getting quality for their money.
