People are asking how to make money online in a recession. One way is by observing how successful companies are behaving right now, given the present economic situation. From there, you can apply the same thing to your home based online business, and perhaps come out ahead in the coming months...

Some friends from the United States were surprised to see a lot of road work being done in the Philippines. They wondered why there seems to be a building frenzy. Condos and houses are sprouting left and right. What is going on?

Successful companies know that there are business cycles. These intrepid entrepreneurs know that eventually, the tide will turn. Before you know it, people will start buying more things again. Consumers will fearlessly start spending once more.

When that happens, will you have a store, moviehouse, restaurant or other business to serve that demand? Well, you certainly will... if you build today.

For bloggers who earn an online income, some of you have no doubt seen declines in online advertising revenue. Fear not. Continue to build. Keep on posting useful and relevant information on the web, so that when the economy rebounds your sites are there, ready to serve the demand.

I read about this fellow who was despairing because his network of 30 sites was only earning $200 a month from AdSense. He wanted to quit. He was so desperate that he wanted Google to ban him.

It's understandable why he would feel that way. Imagine, you work on 30 websites and all you can earn is around $6/month per site. He tries to attract more traffic to those sites, but somehow that magic $100/day target eludes him.

He continues to spend time on those projects, yet his online earnings refuse to grow. Where can he find the easy cash he has been dreaming of?

What do successful companies do in a recession? They carefully analyze their costs (time and money), and channel their resources to projects that work. In the case of our AdSense blogger, it may be better to focus on something other than those 30 blogs.

Yes, just leave those 30 blogs alone. Let them continue bringing in your $2,400 a year. In the meantime, build other blogs elsewhere. Create a network of 30 blogs in another topic. When you reach the $200/month level for that second set of 30, then leave those alone.

You can then branch out to other things such as affiliate marketing or even CPA marketing. In the meantime, you'll have 60 sites working in the background. I've seen cases where a bunch of websites have not been updated for years, yet each of them brings in around $7 to $50 (in some cases, $100) each month from online advertising alone.

This reminds of another internet marketer who promoted a program in 2007 and promptly forgot about it. It was a simple thing to promote on the web, and for two years he did not hear anything about it. Then last week, the affiliate manager told him he was going to receive a check for $436 in affiliate commissions.

What a pleasant surprise, don't you think? The timing was perfect, actually, since he needed an additional $400 for a home improvement project. You know what they say about the teacher appearing when the student is ready, right?

So if you want to make money, do what farmers, teachers, parents, and captains of industry do: BUILD SENSIBLY TODAY.

There is a lot of real estate on the internet waiting for you. You have Twitter, Plurk, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogspot, WordPress, Qassia, Yola, Synthasite, Scribd, your own dotcom sites, videoblogs, photoblogs, membership sites, and more! You don't have to fill those sites with articles every single day. All you need to do is build a useful/relevant site, market it, and move on.

True, there will be some flagship sites that you will need to nurture and develop on at least a weekly basis, but nothing stops you from creating bite-size, self-contained, 20- to 30-page sites that will not require too much maintenance.

So if you want more cash, try creating something of value and relevance today. Keep on building. Sensibly, that is. And when the economy improves, be prepared to be rewarded for your efforts. Here's to your continued and lasting success! :-)
