Lightbox and Opt-in Forms
550 words | Last Updated: February 1, 2007 |
People serious about listbuilding campaigns have been experimenting with Lightbox as far as their opt-in forms (namesqueeze pages) are concerned, because having a list (and a lot of subscribers) is one way of getting repeat visits to your website.
If you have a list, you can get in touch with your subscribers via email on a periodic basis. That way, even if they leave your site, you can still email them with some information and thus invite them back to your site.
It helps, though, to get people to subscribe to your list. The typical opt-in form contains two boxes: one for a subscriber's name, and another for their email address. These forms are sometimes found in the middle of a page, or off to one side.
In other sites, these opt-in forms pop-up. If a visitor has a pop-up blocker installed in their computer, then they will not see your opt-in form.
And that's where Lightbox comes in. It makes a window pop-up, but it is technically not a pop-up. That means pop-up blockers will not block it.
In addition, it makes the rest of the screen grow dark, which forces the reader to focus on your opt-in form. Some marketers have experienced higher sign-up rates as a result of this.
(I wonder if that's why some people use the term "LightSqueeze" -- perhaps that's really a NameSqueeze page that uses the Lightbox javascript code. Namesqueeze pages squeeze a name and email from you before giving out information.)

Litebox is a lighter version of Lightbox:

Greybox is another variation. While Lightbox darkens the main page, Greybox darkens it just a little. Or perhaps I should say it greys the main page. If marketers begin using Greybox in tandem with their opt-in forms, will that be called "GreySqueeze"?

These Lightbox/Greybox codes were originally created so that site owners can highlight images. Marketers and listbuilders are now using these to highlight opt-in forms, because they realize that they can--with the help of their list--earn more than Adsense probloggers.
Instead of just earning a few cents per click, they can now earn tens or even hundreds of dollars per sale (as a result of sending visitors to an online merchant).
So, if you want more traffic (via repeat visits), and rely less on search engine traffic, please look into listbuilding and using forms that will appeal to the Web 2.0 crowd.

Hi Brad, the Lightbox 2 WordPress Plugin, and other similar plugins I've seen are used to display images. If ever I find one which works with email autoresponder opt-in forms, I'll post it here.
