How To Test Your Niche Market
|
If you want to make money online quickly, you need to properly evaluate and test the niche market that you’re planning to dominate. Howie Schwartz and the Online Profit Workshop released a report on How To Test Your Niche Market, which quickly enumerates “how to test a market using Adwords, surveys and tracking, so you can find keywords worth dominating.”
The report left out a number of details, so here’s my quick summary along with references I wish that report had.
1. It all begins with choosing a market.
This is where a lot of people are left scratching their heads. Well, itch no more. Enter a book store and walk on over to the magazine rack. Check out the titles and note which topics have lots of mags, and which don’t.
Visit that section every month for about six months and you’ll see some publications disappear. That should give you a better feel of what people want.
Okay. Got a topic?
2. Search for that topic in Google.
See how many results there are, as well as how many ads appear. Near the bottom of the search results page, see if Google lists any “related searches” so that you can try looking at phrases you didn’t think of previously.
3. Get more general keyword ideas.
Another tool you can use is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Some folks even call this the Google External Keyword Tool.
You’ll find columns marked Advertiser Competition, Search Volume, and Average Search Volume. The more advertisers for your chosen keywords or phrases, the more profitable (generally speaking).
For other keyword tools, please refer to:
You’ve found a good keyword/phrase that attracts a lot of advertisers? It’s time to…
4. Look for products to recommend.
You can visit the Clickbank Marketplace or even Commission Junction, and search for products which you think your target market (which is search for the keyword you are focusing on) will want to buy.
5. Create Your Free Downloadable Report.
You can type this out using OpenOffice Writer, which allows you to even save the document as a PDF file. You can ask others to write the report for you.
Some marketers have even suggested you make use of reprintable articles (the ones which have an “About the Writer” resource box at the bottom of the article) found in EzineArticles or GoArticles, among other article directories.
TIP: You’ll be more effective, however, if you can come up with unique, original, useful articles.
Your Free Downloadable Report will ideally contain useful, general information on the topic or keyword you are targeting, plus links to various affiliate products you found in Step 4.
You will then use your free report to…
6. Get People to Opt-In Through Your Squeeze Page.
This assumes that you have a web site that you control. Preferably, you have your own dot com or domain name, and paid web hosting.
The squeeze page is basically a web page that contains a headline, a list of benefits, a form where people can type in their Name and Email Address, a subscribe/join button, plus links to your site’s Contact Us, About Us, and Privacy Statement pages.
(NOTE: Host4Profit 1028 Promo customers will be given technical assistance for Squeeze Page creation at no extra charge.)
The actual sign-up form in your squeeze page can be powered by email autoresponder services such as Aweber.
When people sign-up for your autoresponder (which also promises to give them your free downloadable report), they will then be brought to a special page where you can…
7. Survey Your Subscribers.
It’s a typical multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blanks form. The report of Howie Schwartz talks about a third-party survey form provider, although I highly recommend the CForms WordPress Plugin to easily install a form in your WP-powered blog.
This plugin allows you to redirect your customers to the Download Page after they submit their answers to your survey.
(From the looks of things, though, it appears the email autoresponder model is single opt-in, not double opt-in, because nothing was mentioned about reminding your subscribers to read the RESPONSE REQUIRED or Confirmation email._
8. Drive traffic to your Squeeze Page.
Howie writes about Adwords, and gives a number of tips on how to tweak your ads so that you get the most for your money. He also brushes on the need for Tracking, so that you can tell which keywords or adwords were able to attract the most number of subscribers.
(Personally, I prefer organic or straight-from-the-search-engines traffic. And as far as tracking is concerned, my fave script is no longer in the market. Perhaps I’ll get in touch with Robert Plank, since he did the programming for that script sometime around 2001 or 2002.)
So, is your niche market worth it?
- Are there numerous advertisers for your target keyword?
- Are there products you can recommend?
- Will people sign-up for your autoresponder where you can market them various products?
Yes, it’s a kind of hit-or-miss experiment. Budget around $50 for Adwords per targeted topic. If you do all these, then you can systematically try different niche markets first, before investing in publishing more unique content (which helps bring qualified traffic to your site).
True, internet marketing isn’t exactly that glamorous. Plus, the drudgery of all this typing and testing makes surfing around reading different blogs much more appealing. Yet if you’re willing to–you guessed it–take action, then you will bring yourself closer to your dream of building your profitable internet business.

I’m also considering using a specialized copywriting software called Glyphius. Has anyone had any experience with this? It is supposed to use statistical analysis to optimize the wording of your advertising copy. I’d be interested in hearing any feedback, good or bad. Thanks
