HappySlip and Internet Marketing Amnesia
516 words | Last Updated: February 21, 2008 |
Have you heard about Filipina YouTube star HappySlip? If you have, or even if you haven't, then you have just experienced a case of internet marketing amnesia. What exactly is this form of forgetfulness on the web, and what is its impact on the future of making money online?
Well, it just shows the ever expanding universe of the web. Here's why...
You'd almost think that with the way the web obliterates borders, time, and space, people would be extremely interconnected and information would be rapidly shared from one point of the globe to another on the opposite end of the world.
Well, nothing could be further from the truth.
Take, for example, the case of HappySlip (who's in the Philippines courtesy of the Philippine Department of Tourism). She first appeared in YouTube on September 7, 2006 and steadily gained popularity in YouTube and also in the Philippines.
Fast forward to 2008, and Filipino bloggers write about HappySlip's trip to the Philippines. You'd think that active bloggers would talk about popular events in internet history with people close to them. Well, guess again.
From example, Mrs. Awesome Planet (wife of popular Pinoy blogger Anton Diaz) wrote in her Feb 1, 2008 post (So, You're Happy Slip!) that: "...this is the first time I heard her name."
Looks like information that's freely and widely available on the web does not truly get spread around.
What does this have to do with internet marketing amnesia? This means that the online market for information will continue to grow, because people will not "remember" information that's already out there.
The search engines will not be able to truly help. Neither will prolific bloggers. And neither will your internet-connected friends.
So, what's holding you back? Are you keeping yourself from sharing what you know, because someone has probably written about it in some part of the web?
Go ahead and write it anyway. Share what you know. Invite others to pay you for that knowledge.
Information can never get truly famous online. Well, perhaps for some amount of time. But not forever.
So if you have something to share or teach, go ahead and take action. Yes, even if the information covers "beginner" topics such as:
How to register a domain name
How to get webhosting
How to build a website
How to setup a blog
How to produce unique content
How to get traffic to your site
How to make money online
Go ahead. Give it a try. Quickly, please. Before you forget.
(AFTER-NOTES: Remember the recent videos produced by Armand Morin and Frank Kern? You know, those long-ish videos that look like Camtasia screencaptures of faceless, bulleted PowerPoint lists? Well, someone's trying to do the same thing, only with a slight twist. Michael Cheney shows you his face in his talking-head videos over at ConfessionsOfAMarketer.com, where he says he will provide underground internet marketing tips for free.)

I'm all for sharing information. User generated content is king now.
One of the probable reasons for this is the web is just so huge now, and so vast, that it's very difficult, even for a popular vlogger like HappySlip, to reach most people using it. Even at hear popularity, I think that HappySlip may only be just a small blip in the entirety of the web. I'm willing to bet that not everyone has even heard of the Cebu Prisoners doing the Thriller.
In the real world, friends are constantly amazed that I don't know a lot of things like what ad "No Sugar!" comes from, or that I've never heard of "Beautiful Girls", even though it's being played ad nauseam on the radio and nearly every street corner.
@Jamie - Thanks for dropping by! Keep on blogging.
@Gerry - Thank goodness for the abundance mentality of the web.
What's "Beautiful Girls"? Oh, you mean "Suicidal (3x)"? =)
Hi Manuel,
I saw one of the works of Happy Slip if remember in you tube . When i read or view Happy Slip ' it reminds me of "Kamison " or is it a good night sleep . Just a joke !!
She's good and i congratulate her for being popular on the web. I dont know her and just happen to hear and see the news . If you know her personally send my regards or should i be the one to send a note?
