Geotargeting and Traffic

Sometimes, in our excitement to attract more visitors to our sites, we don't do enough targeting. We just open the floodgates to all and any person, regardless of intent, and then later hope to monetize all our efforts.
On the other end of the spectrum, however, some of us (with an OC streak) may overly geotarget our visitors. This could lead to stopping the flow of key traffic to your blog. Here's why...
Geotargeting involves choosing visitors based on their location. For example, will you target only those in the United States? Will you write for an audience based in the UK? Will you limit yourself to readers in the Philippines?
While geotargeting does make sense from a marketing point of view (items available only to residents of the US are best shown to people based in the US rather than those based in Australia, for example), we may sometimes forget that high income groups may be working outside their own countries.
For example, the Kabayan OFW blog writes about Christmas for OFWs, and the story of Architect Emmanuel C. Soriano, who misses his family while working in Dubai.
OFWs are Overseas Filipino Workers. Their family is based here in the Philippines, while they work in the Middle East, the United States, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, and other countries.
If you geotarget only visitors based in the US, and exclude visitors from the Philippines, then you'll be missing out on the relatives of the OFW. In marketing, you're not just trying to connect with the customer who has the ability to pay for your product or service.
You're also trying to connect with the people who can influence your customer.
You're trying to communicate with your customers' parents, children, siblings, friends, and relatives. Those influential people might not always be based in the country that you are targeting, but that does not stop them from surfing the web.
So before you limit your online marketing efforts to a certain IP address or geotargeted location, please consider where your target market's influencers reside. Expanding your reach in the borderless world of the internet will help you rationally broaden and maximize your traffic-building programs.
