When you make yourself present in various online watering holes, and the search engines index all these places, you are said to be dominating the search engine conversation. While it may be good to "own" 8 out of the first 10 search engine results for your targeted keyphrase, it may be all too easy to abuse this web traffic generating power. Unless...

Unless you use it responsibly, that is.

If you do a search in Google for authority summit, you will find numerous entries about Howie Schwartz. Sometimes, the ID "brent33ralph" will clue you in.

From here you'll see the attempt to dominate the search engines by posting in places such as:

Squidoo.com
Xanga.com
Blogowogo.com
WetPaint.com
Quizilla.com
Clipmarks.com
Wists.com
AllConferences.com
PRWeb.com
Answers.Yahoo.com
Upcoming.Yahoo.com
ExperienceProject.com
Ning.com
43places.com
GreatestJournal.com

All that is good, moreso if you are promoting an event. Afterall, a key tactic in marketing is to go where the people are, and to make yourself visible.

If you are not promoting an event, however, then it doesn't make sense to post essentially the same post in different places online. It becomes too obvious that you are trying to build links and send traffic to one or two web sites, by dominating the search engine conversation.

If you would like to try this approach, I hope you'll take the time to rewrite your posts and slant them such that they help the particular audience of those various online gathering places.

For example, if you will post in a favorite hangout of teens, your writing there will differ (ideally) from your post in the gathering place of thirtysomething professionals, right. In addition, what may be perceived as useful by a particular age group, may be deemed useless by people significantly older or younger.

There are just so many hours in a day. Which sites should you target?

It will depend on your topic and your desired visitors. Perhaps you can think of a unique phrase, then write 8 variations of articles related to that phrase. Post one of each to a different online gathering place, then do a search for your unique phrase.

The search engine results will quickly show you which sites seem to be favored by the search engine bots. And if you keep this up over time, you will see which ones have staying power.

It's tempting to just look at one experience and exclaim: "Ah, Vox is it!" or "Twitter is an SEO dream!" Remember, though, that there are too many variables. It is better to test your own set-up and your own unique circumstances.

From there, you will know what works for your specific situation. Write well, and write with a purpose, and try to hide your astonishment when you discover someday that all your efforts will help you dominate that first page of search engine results.
