Do Mini Niche Sites Make Money?

If you've been meaning to set-up mini (less than 30 pages) niche web sites, here's a behind the scenes look.
Now and then you'll find someone selling a bunch of ready-made niche website collections for $20. These collections may sometimes contain as many as twenty 8-page sites (complete with image headers).
You might be wondering why someone would just charge, in effect, $1 for eight 350-word articles packaged as an attractive enough web site.
Here's what happened in one experiment...
The "instant sites" were placed within an existing web site which was already receiving 1000 unique visitors per day. The website admins waited for the search engine robots to visit and index those niche websites.
Within a month's time, the entire collection of 20 mini-sites earned a whopping... $1. Yes, one dollar.
(While the main site got 1000 visitors a day, those mini niche sites collectively received only 135 visitors in a month, all coming directly from a search engine.)
In other words, it will take you 20 months (or 2,700 visitors) to recover your $20 investment. So, is the project worth it?
Actually, not all those 20 sites made money. It was only one of the twenty that earned the entire $1. Given that the cost of that one site is actually just $1 (twenty sites for just $20, right?), then you've recovered your investment after just one month.
Now if you study the patterns, find the winning niches, and do this with 99 other topics, then that's about $100 for you each month, from instant web sites.

That's pretty interesting stuff! I would never pay for a site from someone because I would be afraid that they had sold the exact same content to someone else! That might be why the example didn't do so well.
Nice experiment. Real world data still is the best source of info.
Court, the content was run through Copyscape to see how many other sites were also using it. Fortunately, there was only one other copy detected by Copyscape. While the collection earned $1 in its first month, it looks like the second month will bring in $2.
