Conditions of the free .com.PH domain name
431 words |
J. Angelo Racoma lays out the conditions of the free .com.ph domain name.
You'll get a free .com.ph domain name (you own the name and the content you put up) plus free monthly web hosting (150 MB or hard disk space, 4GB of monthly bandwidth) subject to the following:
- Rated PG-13 content
- Link back to the .com.ph campaign
- Couple of substantive posts weekly
- At least 150 unique visitors per day
- At least 20 rss subscribers to your Feedburner feed
- Use it as your primary domain
Primary domain... if you have another web site, you'll need to send your old site's visitors to your new .com.ph site.
This free domain name and web hosting campaign is definitely attractive to new or not-that-new (yet not-that-old) bloggers who have a blog at Blogspot.com or Wordpress.com or other free blog sites.
Here are a couple of my suggestions to those interested in the offer:
1. Build up your Blogspot/Wordpress traffic first. It's not easy for newcomers to have 150 unique visitors a day. A friend of mine who's been blogging practically daily for five months now has only 67 unique visitors daily. This, in spite of the fact that she actively promotes her blog in the various forums visited by her target readers.
2. Register the .com domain name. Remember the pldt.com.ph vs pldt.com case? If you want to get a free .com.ph domain name, please register the more inexpensive .com domain name first. If someone else gets it, some of your visitors might forget to add the .ph and end up visiting that other person's dotcom site.
Or worse, or they might send emails to the dotph-less site.
Some observations / comments:
- The 4GB bandwidth allowance (Ploghost.com's Plan 150 Package) might not be enough to attract moderately established bloggers or those with a lot of photos in their site, because they're probably already hitting the 6GB to 8GB bandwidth level.
- It would be great if the .com.ph Team will provide tutorials on setting up Feedburner feeds to help potential availers determine if they qualify. I realize these help files will be published in the future (if they haven't already been posted).
- I hope more people will write about this online, to help increase domain name mindshare of the .com.ph brand.

Thanks for the link again, Manuel.
Re the traffic, this is only a condition for the free renewal. Otherwise, for the starting offer, we'll be considering blogs with lower traffic. We do know it's not quite easy to raise one's readership, but I do think a year is enough to get to considerable levels even through only organic growth (and from search engine traffic).
Re feedburner, well, we thought that the number of feedburner readers is a good proxy for determining the readership via RSS. Not really a hard condition for the initial year, but within a year's time, I think getting 15-20 readers is not difficult.
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks, J! I'm confident Pinoy bloggers will be able to build traffic in a year's time. As the months roll by, the urge to continue increases because of the previous months' investment.
On the issue of RSS subscribers, it will depend on the topic of the web site. Techie-related sites are able to get a lot of subscribers, while parenting sites don't get that many (less than 12?) RSS subscribers.
But we'll see...
Good insights, Manuel. Of course, things are just starting out, and there are really no "hard" conditions--things are negotiable with adequate justification. As you said, RSS subscribers would depend on topic/theme. Perhaps even traffic--but traffic does grow organically, regardless of topic.
As for activity, well that's something a blogger can control. In fact, I'd say the higher level of activity, the better the traffic growth rate would also be!
