Companies are increasingly turning to the web. Perhaps they now see the blog explosion, or the favorite online haunts of consumers, or even the looming certainty that internet content is being pushed even to people who do not have regular internet access via their computers.

Yes, I'm talking about the growing cell phone crowd. You've seen them in different places: theaters, trains, pedestrian lanes... They're oblivious to traffic and have their noses buried in those tiny screens.

Well, companies have indeed noticed...

For example, who would've imagined that even car companies like Honda would use the web for advertising? I mean, in this Friendster - Facebook - Twitter - YouTube world, who would bother visiting a typical corporate web site which trumpets that Honda launches VCM 643, right?

That's right, folks, the web has millions if not billions of "channels" to view, and those standard company homepages are viewed by journalists, researchers, and practically everyone except the larger target market of those companies.

And that's why you'll find more companies flocking online. No, not via their own web site. They're now looking at where people congregate on the web, and then make their presence felt in those places.

What does this mean for you, as a blogger? It means that your blog is similar to a corporate web site. People will not seek it out, unless others even know about it.

It means you'll need to find out what people view or read online, join those communities, and then make your presence felt there also.

On the flip side, it also means that you hold a certain power in your hands: the attention of readers.

If you can post things in your site which attract people, then your site becomes another "destination" on the web. It might not be as popular as YouTube or MySpace, but all you need to be is just a bit more popular than those corporate sites.

And if you are able to attract just a little bit more traffic than those companies, they will seek you out.

Think about that. :-)
