Some of my friends have been asking about ClickMaximizer (www.ClickMaximizer.com) and the ability to float Adsense ads so that they're always visible even if people scroll down a page.

Here are some of my observations and suggestions.

1. This will not always result in getting your ads more noticed or more clicked. As usual, test this on your site. Usually, when a page is scrolling and certain elements do not move, people become blind to these stationary objects.

Just the same, test.

2. ClickMaximizer hides the code inside some sort of javascript gibberish. Perhaps the creator wants to "protect" his work by making it hard for people to understand how the page was built.

Unfortunately, search engine robots will have a difficult time understanding what the page is about. If SE bots have a hard time, how will your webpage rank in the search engines? For what terms? And how will people know about your site?

This forces some webmasters to resort to any of the following:

2a. Page Cloaking -- Serve the search engines a plain text webpage, so that the ads are targeted. Show human visitors the javascript-ed page. There should be no penalty because the displayed information would be the same. It will just be the html code that differs.

2b. List Building -- Get people to subscribe to your mailing list or autoresponder, so that every X number of days, people will know where your online article is. Even if your page does not rank in the search engines, your subscribers will still find it via their email inbox.

3. Firefox and Internet Explorer show different things. I suggest you try visiting the ClickMaximizer pages using Firefox and IE so that you can see the differences. In some examples, the code could use some fine-tuning because some parts of the "content area" are partially hidden when viewed using IE.

In addition, the scrollbar behavior varies between FF and IE, and this can have an impact on your Adsense CTRs. Again, you'll need to test so Adsense channels will be quite useful here.

4. I'm reminded of CSS and Fixed Layers. The examples given by ClickMaximizer look like fixed layers. These are portions of the screen that do not move as you scroll up or down the page. The moving portions just slide under the fixed portions.

When I viewed the examples using IE, however, they reminded me of CSS overflow frames.

Personally, I would go for fixed layers. You'll learn more about CSS Fixed Layer Managers at
