229 words |
People have been talking about the "Attention Economy." With so many things people can read, view or listen to, it has become increasingly difficult to catch anyone's attention. What exactly rules the attention economy?
If you read Why Value Rules the Attention Economy, you'll find this major assumption: posting often can be a handicap.
Afterall, if you publish many posts in a short amount of time, you won't be able to focus the attention of your readers.
Hmmm. It's difficult to pinpoint what people consider valuable enough to hold their attention. Sometimes, it's the precise lack of value that holds their attention.
Sometimes, people just want to zone out.
On the internet, you can catch someone's "attention" by providing light entertainment. In Tagalog, some people will say: "Ayoko nang mag-isip." ("I don't want to think anymore.")
In other words, this focus on providing value to catch someone's attention is quite noble. But if you choose to take just that one path, you're missing out on people who might--at some point in time--just want to relax.
These same people who might temporarily want escapist diversions may someday turn to your site for the more "valuable" posts.
Think about it. Who wants to get the same thing all the time? All work and no play...

Makes sense under the assumption that readers are loyal. However, if we assume that readers are really at the discretion of what Google finds relevant, then posting often is a good idea. I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Thanks, Mike. It would be good to test the "post-often vs post-occasionally" idea.
