Do you remember BlogRush? Well, after sticking with it for quite some time, my friends have been asking whether it has finally brought in a flood of traffic. With clickthrough rates still below 1 percent, the short answer is No, we haven't seen a gush of web traffic.
With TrafficJam coming into the picture, however, the old clickthrough rates we experienced previously have increased by as much as 2.8 times.
Here's why it happened...
People love lists. You know how you're drawn to those Top 100 or Top 10 lists? Well, with TrafficJam people are able to view such a list of popular web sites in the BlogRush network. With curiosity comes traffic, and that's why visitors coming in from those widget boxes and TrafficJam lists are close to triple the amount of visitors before.
And the great thing about BlogRush is you can experiment with different blog post titles and find out (within 2 days) if your post is interesting enough to read.
For those who are tired of experimenting and finding out which titles do not work, the popular list in TrafficJam will give you an idea of what people are interested in.
If you want to dig deeper, there are categories which neatly summarize the winner titles in your chosen field. For example, are you interested in News and Media? What about Computers and the Internet?
(For the BlogRush experiments my friends and I have conducted, we focused mainly on the Business category.)
If you check out the performance of a BR widget (see table on the right), you'll notice that blog posts have been tweaked. There were a couple of "loser" titles, and that's why some bloggers now shy from those topics.
Well, we don't completely avoid those topics. We just don't allow those to appear anymore in the BR widgets. Afterall, what's the point of displaying things which the BR community does not like, right?
In terms of revenue, however, we find that while TrafficJam has helped bring in about three times more visitors, the revenues remained more or less the same. Could this be an indication that people coming in via TJ aren't interested in buying anything?
Similar to Digg or social networking traffic, sudden surges in visitors do not automatically translate to sales. You'll need a different approach, though.
And that alternate approach is listbuilding.
People who visit your site because they find it popular will not simply whip out their credit cards and buy whatever product it is that you are promoting. They will, however, be more inclined to sign up for your mailing list, specially if you offer them a Special Report which they may download upon joining your list.
Anyway, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Don't give up on BlogRush.
The (now growing) traffic will not translate to sales in the short-term. But over time, you can expect to reap the benefits of getting more people to see your site.
Perhaps the word "rush" is not appropriate, because success with BlogRush clearly ties up with the patient and long-term "Law of the Farm."
Here's wishing you and your site more visitors in the coming months.

imo, Blog Rush is a waste of space. I dumped it a couple months ago.

You'd be better off just giving your space away for free as a promotion.
One of the success secrets of BlogRush is to not use it on every page of your site. The key lies in focus.
