If you recall an earlier post, I hinted that you shouldn’t give up on BlogRush. Here are some early January 2008 stats about the traffic that this site received via the BR widget.
I did some experiments and found out that, as far as the BlogRush crowd is concerned, certain topics simply do not capture their attention that much, even if those topics are popular.
Yes, even if you tweak the title of post, some topics simply lack the “pull” needed to draw viewers in.
The great thing about BlogRush is that you can quickly get feedback regarding the popularity of your blog post titles in as little as 12 hours. And if you choose to push your testing to 24 hours, you will rapidly gain a firmer sense of which headlines work.
This means you can immediately change your blog’s title (without affecting your search engine rankings) for purposes of testing the reaction of the BR widget reading public. In the sample BR image of my readership, for example, you’ll note two entries that gained a blue-cold attention of just 2 clicks.
A quick and easy tweak, and I’m back to a red-hot clickthrough rate that is 17% higher than what was experienced in 2007. In other words, people who look at BR widgets will read your article if your title attracts them.
How much exposure did this blog give to BlogRush in exchange for the 54 (50 + 2 + 2) readers who visited? Around 288 views. This blog displayed the BR widget 288 times, and we got 54 visitors in return (plus something more), thanks to the BR network.
If you’re just focusing on the traffic that BlogRush can drive to your site, however, you’re missing out on a key metric: Headline Effectivity. It will help you more if you try changing just the title of your post, and then monitor the response of your market.
Doing this will reveal to you what your targeted niche market wants to read about, at least as far as the title of your post is concerned.
And if there’s a key lesson here worth remembering, it is this: Test, Test, Test!
Avoid the temptation to just sit on your laurels. True, enjoy your past successes, yet try to venture outside your comfort zone. Be courageous enough to discover what doesn’t work, because that will help steer you towards what does work.
