Are Non-Blogs Dead?

Let's cut to the chase: Non-blogs are far from dead.
So don't get bothered by those people saying that unless your web site is a blog, then it does not have a chance against all those Wordpress-powered, RSS-enhanced sites.
Either they don't know what they're talking about, or they're just trying to sell you a system that will automate the creation of your very own Wordpress-powered blog.
I've seen non-blogs rank high in search engines. These are hand-made, static html pages (yes, it's so 90s, I know) that provide useful content to lots of people. To students, in particular.
And that's why schools and universities have links pointing to those non-blog sites. No wonder they rank high in Google search results.
Afterall, why will search engines penalize an "old" site (think pre-blog era) which provides solid content and is linked to by reputable web sites, just because it's not a blog? Or just because it's not updated as often?
I'm not saying forget the blog (categories, rss feeds, etc). All I'm saying is that you shouldn't worship blogs too much. And don't fret if your site looks simple (see www.useit.com or www.samizdat.com)
Focus on creating a useful site, and everything else will fall into place.
Of course, if you can add a blog, podcast, and full-text RSS feeds to your site, then that will increase the search engines' awareness of your pages.
(In the next post, I'll write about the financial aspects of the recently popular Adsense Real Estate, and about the sobering truth on how likely you're going to earn $7,500 in Google Adsense checks.)
