Does listbuilding help increase your AdSense revenues? Will the repeat visits finally free you from reliance on Google or search engines? Here's the unfettered truth about online advertising revenues and repeat visits from people who subscribe to your newsletter or email autoresponder...
Here's the typical scenario:
1. You offer a free download to people who subscribe to your mailing list.
2. Once subscribed, they then receive a series of emails. Each email is a short blurb or teaser, with a link back to your site (for the full version of the article).
3. Your readers visit the specific web page, where they find the content. Some AdSense ads are placed on that page.
Why do people do this? Well, in a typical web site, 90% of your new visitors will leave, never to return. And people who never return to your site will never see your ads. And that translates to zero revenues for you, right?
But what if you're able to invite them to subscribe to your mailing list, and then they receive all those follow-up emails. Wouldn't some of those 90% return to your site? And wouldn't those re-visitors see your ads?
Sounds like a great business model, right?
Well... the results of an experiment show that repeat visitors (those who come back because of an email), similar to loyal readers, do not see your ads.
They only see your content.
It's like they have blinders.
If I were you, I would use list subscribers for something other than AdSense. But who knows? Perhaps in your case, things might turn out differently.
(In a future experiment, we will test what kinds of advertisements are noticed by repeat visitors.)
UPDATE: Eric Giguere reveals in It's All About The Traffic, Stupid! that building a list and sending subscribers to web pages containing Adsense has averaged 60 Adsense cents per day (based on just 40 subscribers).
